Behind the Scenes with the Livestock Crew

Any given farm day includes unexpected problems, mistakes, bad weather, broken down equipment...you name it. Below are a few of the more interesting things that happened to the livestock crew recently:

ABOVE: Predator pressure is relatively low (compared to previous years before we had the guard dogs). Above is a hawk who got lucky this time, with one of our broilers.

BELOW: Guard dog Deuce has an annoying little habit of getting out of her fence sometimes, and she's very familiar with catching rides on the ATV, tractor cab, or any given subaru. Here she is getting a ride back with Tracy recently (left, in one of the subarus; right, in the tractor).

BELOW: Last week, Nat found a Great Horned Owl caught in the chicken fencing. He was able to get it untangled (wearing very thick gloves), while the owl was clicking its beak threateningly. He said that it did calm down eventually. He released it (after a photo op). It flew away and seemed totally fine. For folks who came on the bird walk earlier this Spring, you may remember that there was a Great Horned Owl nest in the driveway fork (near the Dairy Barn.) Possibly the same one??? But we're not totally sure.
